The square in Montmarte dedicated to French author Marcel Aymé (1902-1967), sports a jolly statue if what is probably Aymé’s most famous character, Dutilleul.
In his famous short story, Le Passe-Muraille (The Walker-Through-Walls), Dutilleul suddenly discovers he has “the remarkable gift of being able to pass through walls with perfect ease.” Failing to rid himself of this strange ability despite medical advice, Dutilleul puts his skills to misuse, sending people mad and carrying out robberies.
The story was set in Montmartre, hence the siting of this popular statue. Urban myth has it that any wish made while holding Dutilleul’s hand will come true – strange, given that the story didn’t have the happiest of endings!
