Look Down in Barcelona

-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 14

Every Thursday, I publish a post containing photos taken from above or below, and invite you to join in the challenge by posting your own photos with an up or down perspective.
This week, I’m looking down on Barcelona for my own entry.

I have featured many images of Barcelona in previous posts, and usually I’m looking up at the marvellous architecture and beautiful skies.  For a change, this time I’m looking down.

All of these views are from the Casa Milà, a stunning Gaudí building on Passeig de Gràcia.  It is known more commonly as ‘La Pedrera’ because its exterior of mosaic-like stonework calls to mind a quarry.

It was commissioned by the industrialist Pere Milà i Camps and his wife, hence the official name of Casa Milà, and was built between 1906 and 1912. Their plan was for a family home on the boundary of Barcelona and Gràcia, and they also wanted apartments they could rent out. As a result, La Pedrera was built as two apartment blocks with independent entrances linked by two large inner courtyards and a beautiful curvy façade that unites the two.  From the roof you can see down into the courtyards, and also admire the views of the surrounding area, including the Sagrada Familia.

  1. Lovely! I may have to pick your brains on Barcelona one of these days… I’m thinking of moving there next year.

No entry for this week… I’ve got one barely passable shot of the sky… won’t make a good enough stand-alone, I’m afraid. Am aiming to razz something up for next week!
