-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 45

Every Thursday, I publish a post containing photo(s) taken from above or below, and invite you to join in the challenge by posting your own photos with an up or down perspective.

The striking Spire of Dublin stands 120 metres tall and measures 3 metres in girth. It was unveiled in 2002 outside the General Post Office, which it dwarfs – it is seven times the height of the GPO!

Gazing directly up the structure makes for a dizzying experience, with the slender tip (just 15cm in diameter) seemingly curling slightly into space.

It is sometimes known as the Monument of Light.  I was lucky enough to see it on a gloriously sunny day, and I can see why it would get that moniker.

By day, the needle-like structure glints in the sunlight; by night, the tip is illuminated from a light within, shining a beacon across the Dublin night sky.

The lower 10 metres of the sculpture is partially polished in an abstract design, based on a core sample of earth and rock formation taken from the ground where the spire stands.  This slightly shinier surface catches magical reflections of the people and buildings here on O’Connell Street.

Just across the road James Joyce stands, seemingly contemplating this new addition to the Dublin skyline.
