-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 51

Don Quixote mistakenly took windmills for enemy giants with long flailing arms. Hard to imagine, when they can look so picturesque and benign.
This beauty is an iconic building in the quintessentially English village of Finchingfield, in Essex. It was built around 1756 and is the smallest remaining post mill in Essex. It is open to the public on the third Sunday of each month during the summer but even if you can’t get inside, it is worth a look from outside, especially when a blue sky happens along.
In contrast to that very English windmill, here is the headless body of a French one – almost the last remnant of Marseille’s historic windmills.
This golden representation of a Belgian windmill high up on a wall in the Grand Place in Brussels doesn’t look so different to an English one.
I can’t end without another reference to good old Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, so let’s take a quick look down at a fun mosaic in Toledo.

I love windmills. Old ones like this one at Finchingfield are wonderful. I know of another lovely one at Skidby in East Yorkshire. Windmills were so very much part of village life. I find modern wind turbines quite beautiful too, though I know many people would not agree with me. Just as windmills were essential to life in the past, power, in the form of electricity is a necessity of modern life and I find wind turbines more benign than some of the other power-generating possibilities.

I like the modern ones too! I would have included a photo but I don’t have one. I always seem to see them at the side of the motorway when even I can’t stop for a photo shoot!
