Salut! from Barcelona

The Catalans have been producing wine for over 2,00 years, much to the delight of the Romans and everyone who has come along since.

I enjoyed this refreshing (and reflecting) glass of white, along  with paprika potatoes, at one of my favourite wine spots in Barcelona.  La Vinya del Senyor may be tiny but it has a comprehensive selection of wine and a fantastic setting right in front of the impressive Santa Maria del Mar.  The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and I particularly like the fact that they change their recommended selections every couple of weeks.  They do a small but tasty menu of snacks to accompany your chosen libation.

If you are lucky enough to get seated at one of the four small outside tables, you can also enjoy the accompanying views of the church, and all the comings and goings in this busy square.

But back to the wine…  If you want to know more about the local wines, I have found an excellent book that tells you the basics of each of the Catalan wine designations (DOs); not only is it informative, but it is also beautifully illustrated.  I bought my copy in Barcelona where a number of bookshops and gift shops stock it.
