A colourful note: tan was one of Crayola’s new colours in 1958. I went back many years to select the image above, because this shade had an alternative crayon name as part of Crayola’s State Crayon Collection: In 2004-2006, it was known as Arizona Grand Canyon.
The first written use of tan as a colour name in English dates back to 1590. It originated from tannum (oak bark), as used in the tanning of leather.
