Top Cat was one of my favourite tv programmes as a child. Made by Hanna-Barbera, this 30-episode animated series first ran from September 1961 to April 1962. In the UK, it debuted on the BBC in 1962 (cut down to 26 episodes following censorship of themes such as suicide).

A colourful note: the term dandelion for this yellow shade obviously comes from the colour of the dandelion flower.
As for the word “dandelion” itself, it comes from the French words “dent de lion“, meaning “lion’s tooth”. The Spanish language went for the same meaning, using “diente de león”.
This dental terminology is believed to refer to the jagged outline formed by the narrow petals. To confuse us, however, the French did not use “dent de lion”: they took a more scientific approach, naming the flower “pissenlit”, meaning “wet the bed”, which refers to the plant’s diuretic properties.

I thought he was Jerry of Tom & Jerry. Guess I stopped watching cartoons before Top Cat came along. Thanks for contributing to this week’s Monday Mural.

I loved this too! I remember it had to be billed as Boss Cat in the U.K. because there was a brand of cat food called Top Cat.

Yes, you’re right, but the public ignored it and still called him Top Cat

Thanks to you I have the Top Cat theme tune going round and round my hat. 🙂
He’s the boss, he’s a pip, he’s the championship. He’s the most tip top, Top Cat.
Ad infinitum …
