Looking Down on London

O2 and Canary Wharf beyond,  London,  March 2017

As promised, I am taking you up high for an aerial glimpse of London throughout 2017, with the aim of taking you to a different viewpoint each month.

January took us up to the top outdoor gallery at St Paul’s Cathedral, February took us onto a rooftop terrace close to St Paul’s and this month we have gone further west along the Thames and up in a cable car.

The Emirates Air Line crosses the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsular and O2 Stadium to the Royal Docks.  There is easy access using underground, DLR or boat.  It is the UK’s first urban cable car, with a high point at 90 metres, three helix towers holding the steel cables, and 34 cars that move up to 4 metres per second.

I strongly recommend it for a view of East London and well beyond.  I suggest a return trip as the journey only lasts about 5 minutes each way, which isn’t long enough to absorb everything there is to see.  I will be back to do an evening journey soon for a different take on London.  The journeys after 19:00 are slowed down to around 12 minutes each way so that you can better enjoy the night lights.  Information and ticket booking is available online or on site.
