With the arrival of the Berlin Wall, this bridge became part of the border between East and West. It became an official pedestrian border crossing for West Berlin residents only in 1963. With the demise of the Wall in 1989 the bridge underwent restoration work, opening once more to full pedestrian and traffic access in 1994.

Beautiful, beautiful shadows and arches.
Know Berlin only with Charley’s checkpoint, I wonder how it would be like, as one city (huge, that’s for sure, because all the big buildings were in the former East part!). From my son who was there a few years ago, I saw pics of all the painted walls nearby the previous border.
