This grey heron kindly came across from Heron Island in St Albans’ ornamental lake. He seemed well settled in the chalk stream, the River Ver, that runs alongside the lake and posed quite happily for my lens.

I love the geometric pattern on a heron’s breast. I’ve only managed such a close-up in a zoo, never got close enough in nature. Great model, great photographer!
