October 23rd is now a National Holiday in Hungary, celebrating the nationwide revolt in 1956 that was the start of the Hungarian Revolution, which ran until 10 November.
Time Magazine named the Hungarian Freedom Fighter its Man of the Year for 1956. The cover of the 7 January 1957 magazine featured a fighter depicted by Russian-born artist Boris Chaliapin. Son of Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin, he moved to the USA after the 1917 Revolution and was responsible for over 400 Time magazine covers.
A replica of this was produced as a mural in Budapest to recognise the 60th anniversary of the revolution in 2017.
