Thank goodness she did feel like writing. Anne’s Diary of a Young Girl has allowed us to appreciate the thoughts, ideals and dreams of a teenager during her two years hiding away from the German occupation of Amsterdam. Sadly, her tale halted in August 1944 when Anne and her family were shipped to Auschwitz.
A distressing story, I know, but one with lessons and ideals that we should all learn from.
“The final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”
The Anne Frank Zentrum, at Rosenthaler Strasse 39 in Berlin, is a great place to learn more. It focuses on her life, but also includes the voices and images of young people of current Berlin, uniting the thoughts and concerns of the present with the lessons of the past.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
I will leave you with a final quote from Anne:
Whoever is happy will make others happy too.
