Towering tall in a sunny Barcelona
The Torre Glories, or Torre Agbar, has towered tall over Barcelona since 2005. This oval structure stands 144 metres tall, thanks to French architect Jean Novel, who was influenced by the natural beauty of Montserrat and the architectural curves of Gaudi. It was originally home to the water company Grup Agbar, and its shape and design has also been likened to a water geyser, with Nouvel himself saying “this tower is a fluid mass that bursts through the ground like a geyser under permanent, calculated pressure”. Others have detected more phallic influences.
Impressive in daylight, it is yet more striking at night when the multi-coloured windows flaunt their hues without shame. However, the building is not practical for those inside, with far too many windows that require cleaning, plus the dirty panes are too small to provide decent views and they either let in no light or far too much light!

In my opinion the building is quite ugly, but at least it creates a talking point! I, too, get the phallic reference – I wonder what that says about me?

I know similar buildings on smaller scale where the architects outdid themselves creating something visually striking with scant regard for the people who have to live with their creation. Having said that – yes, I see a phallus inspired structure – but I have no problem with this 😀

I do wonder sometimes if “human occupation” is even considered in the design of some buildings and urban landscapes. Sigh!
