These musicians are the work of Austrian sculptor, Max Rieder (1909-2000). Born in Salzburg, he studied and worked in Vienna, Turkey and Germany, returning to Salzburg. There are several pieces of his work gracing the city, with this one encapsulating both his work and a key element of the city.
Rieder’s work focused on the human body, usually in a simple but realistic format. These bronze musicians are referred to as the musical graces (musizierende Grazien), and may well have been inspired by the Three Graces. Created in 1955, they stand in the Mirabell Gardens as though it is their natural home, here in the city of music.
