The bells of St Paul’s are out of action for the first time since World War II. The twelve bells have hung in the Cathedral’s north west tower since 1878, and have rung to celebrate a variety of occasions, including royal births, coronations and jubilees.
Removing the bells for repair had been planned for January, but proved to be more difficult than expected. They were eventually removed in early June, by bringing them out through the front of the tower (using the structure still visible in the image above) and lowering them carefully to the ground.
The bells are now undergoing a major overhaul at Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough, where they were originally cast, and are expected back on duty for the 140th anniversary of their dedication on 1 November 2018.

Interesting that the bells need some TLC from time to time. Glad the experts are still in business. 😊

It does look a tricky business! My son-in-law’s Mum lives in Loughborough so it’s good to know some business is going in that direction. 🙂 🙂

Not a place I know, though I know a few people who have been to uni there.

I’ve never heard these bells but remember them from the childhood rhyme ‘Oranges & Lemons’ and feel sad that they will no longer be heard ( for a while at least )

I hadn’t thought of that connection 🙂

Wow! an insight into the care & maintenance of monuments. We are not typically privy to this aspect – but it does make sense that these cleaning & repair works do need to take place.

Who knew bells needed repair?! I’m surprised there are still companies in that business!!

They’ve gone back to the people who made them. Why it was there I do not know

Oh, I’m all for the bells returning to their makers! Seems a long way away, though, in days of yore…..
