Bella gazing out to sea

    –

Bella the Liver Bird atop the Royal Liver Building, Liverpool, July 2019

The liver bird is a mythical creature that symbolises the city of Liverpool. It is normally shown as a cormorant, carrying branch of seaweed in its beak.

The two best known liver birds, one male, one female, perch on the clock towers of the Royal Liver Building at Liverpool’s Pier Head. The male, Bertie, looks over the city and the female, Bella, looks out to sea. This metal pair were designed by Carl Bernard Bartels and constructed by the Bromsgrove Guild of Applied Arts.

  1. Yep – after you’d shown them a few days ago I read up on them (I thought at first that it was a species of bird that had completely slipped by me). But I didn’t know that they had to fasten the liver birds down so that they can’t fly away – at least that ‘s what it looks like in your photo 😉
