Muness is the most northerly castle in the UK. It was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, was burned down in 1627 and was probably never fully repaired.
Outside stands a puffin reminder of the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova.

What a beautiful old castle. Kind of sad it was never fully repaired after the fire.

I agree – it was a sizeable structure, well built for defence. But not against fire, it seems

I was as intrigued as the others about the connection between Muness, Valentina Tereshkova, and a puffin. So I turned to my search engine of choice and interestingly, no matter in which language I searched (Tereshkova is differently transcribed in German), Debbie, your site was always amongst the first three hits. In the end I found some explanation: “This is one of a series of puffins to be found at various places of visitor interest all around the island. They were designed as a photo trail for visitors to a music festival.” That’s where I stopped looking, there is only so much time I have for procrastination! đ

Well done, my knicker elastic friend đ
I had searched and didn’t discover why the puffins were around. I only met one other puffin on my trip and he was Galileo! I will share him soon as his location was unusual ……

None, I believe!!!
I found one other famous puffin on the same Shetland island, and he was Galileo – so the connection seems random

Why a puffin? The ruin in the background sounds interesting.

The castle behind seems to have had a very short life, was pretty much a folly for most of the time. But it looks great in the rugged Shetland landscape, with a gorgeous sky that day

An oddity, but it was good top find a puffin after my hunt for live ones failed !
