Into space

Muness castle, Shetland, August 2019

Muness is the most northerly castle in the UK. It was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, was burned down in 1627 and was probably never fully repaired.

Outside stands a puffin reminder of the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova.

  1. I was as intrigued as the others about the connection between Muness, Valentina Tereshkova, and a puffin. So I turned to my search engine of choice and interestingly, no matter in which language I searched (Tereshkova is differently transcribed in German), Debbie, your site was always amongst the first three hits. In the end I found some explanation: “This is one of a series of puffins to be found at various places of visitor interest all around the island. They were designed as a photo trail for visitors to a music festival.” That’s where I stopped looking, there is only so much time I have for procrastination! 😀

    • The castle behind seems to have had a very short life, was pretty much a folly for most of the time. But it looks great in the rugged Shetland landscape, with a gorgeous sky that day
