Alice’s Adventure in Brighton

This giant mural on the wall of a cafe in Brighton, is the work of local street artist, Eelus. The work is well fitted into the combined space of the wall, with clever positioning around the small window. It is hard to see with the tables outside, but Alice is standing on a classic black and white tiled floor, with White Rabbit standing to the side.

And why Alice, you may be thinking. Well, Lewis Carroll enjoyed spending summer in Brighton, so there is an element of a local link. There are many ideas about who and what inspired Carroll’s stories, but one theory is that a tunnel at a house in Brighton, leading from private garden to beach, inspired the rabbit hole location.

  1. That’s a fabulous way to use the image of Alice when she’s 10 feet tall (except this is much bigger). The “eat me” temptations in the original story have acquired so many associations since the story was written!

  2. Where’s the white rabbit gone? It’s been a year since I visited Brighton but I’m sure there used to be a white rabbit standing right behind Alice… 🙂
