Red Lion, Burslem, Staffordshire, March 2021
This pub has closed down, and its frontage is boarded and embellished with a depiction of the gilded angel from the top of Burslem’s Old Town Hall, plus some words many will recognise:
… she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
Whether I’m right or wrong …
Robbie Williams lived some of his early childhood in here, when his parents were landlords of the Red Lion. He grew up in Burslem and the surrounding area, and was living in Tunstall when he joined Take That in 1990.
It is suspected that the lyrics of Angels, written in 1997, were inspired by the gilded angel in Burslem.

I always love how you give us so much history and detail when you photograph a mural, Debbie. I love how you explained about the angel, too. It’s a wonderful piece and shows how knowledgeable you are, dear.

I loved that explanation of the angel on the pub. And, of course, it’s association with Robbie. How clever of you to find it.

It was luck more than anything. I was there for work and took and hour or two out to explore!

Amazing who you come across when wandering! Virtually at least. The town could do with his help to pull it back from collapse

It was a place overflowing with coal and pottery history – and then Robbie Williams on top of that!

If it wasn’t for bloggers I would miss out on so much but also spots to discover for myself if ever I get away again 🙂 🙂
