The Turner Contemporary stands in a prominent position on the seafront at Margate. On the ground floor is a large gallery with huge windows that take advantage of the natural light and the stunning view to sea. The current exhibition in this Sunley Gallery is by the artist Edmund de Waal, who grew up in nearby Canterbury. It consists of 286 porcelain vessels in 9 aluminium and plexiglass vitrines, that hand from the ceiling, close to the windows.
The idea is that the installation will take on a new look as the outside light changes, and as entrance is free you can pop in regularly to take a look.
It was inspired by Constables reference to the value of “doing a great deal of skying“. The public are encouraged to do their own skying here, and mats are provided.
I was there on New Year’s Day and unfortunately it was the dullest, greyest day imaginable. I will have to go back to do my skying.
Atmosphere, runs till 8 March 2015.

What a fascinating idea! I could do with some R and R. 🙂
You did say you had a museum post 🙂

This wasn’t the one! I had forgotten about this – I think my mind was numb from the cold at this point. I had planned to walk along the coast to Broadstairs and get the train back to London from there but the cold and wind were just too much and I wasn’t sure I could get there before dark. The other museum will follow sometime soon – I need to finish some research.

No worries, Debs. I wasn’t ‘pushing’. I know you have a much busier life than me. I just like the museum 🙂

I must get over that way some time! I keep thinking of so many places I want to visit….so this year I must knock a few off my list!

It’s a nice part of the country and easily accessible by train. Canterbury, Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate are all on the same line.

I’m in Herts so the train from St Pancras works well for me. You’re probably better off driving. If you decide to head over let me know. If I’m free I’ll join you for a coffee 🙂

Most weekdays are fine, depending on what I might have on. Tuesdays

Oops….didn’t finish! A couple of Tuesday’s in the month I’m usually in as my photo club meets. Weekends are usually good, but engineering works are on until the latter part of Feb, so I’m giving it a miss at the mo because it’s a pain with the bus links.

Replacement buses are a nightmare, I sympathise! Let me know when you’re in on a Tuesday or we can arrange a weekend a bit later in the year.

Me too. Though the art didn’t do much for me. I’m happy to give it another go though, when there is more exciting light
