I know a lot of readers who fancy entering a photo competition and either don’t know what’s open or don’t get around to it. To help, here’s a list to get you started. Please let me know of any others you are aware of in the comments below and I’ll keep the page up-to-date. I must just add, that many of them provide reviews of your entries and they are worth entering just for that.
Monthly calls for entries, each month with its own topic, each overseen by a world-renowned photographer or industry professional.
Monthly winners receive online exposure, $2000 in cash prizes, and feedback. Varying costs to enter, but $80 for 12 months membership gives most entries and feedback.
At the end of the year winners are exhibited in shows in New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

Lens Culture Black & White Awards
Awards for both series entry and single image. Prices include cash rewards, media exposure and appearance at exhibitions. Enter 5+ images to get a free Professional Review of your work. Single photo entry is free. 50$ for 5 images to reviewed as single entries. 60$ for a series of 10 related images, reviewed as a series.

Wanderlust Photo of the Year

Open to amateur photographers only. Entry is free. There are four categories: People; Wildlife; Landscape; Travel Icons.
You may enter up to four photos in total, split across the categories in any manner. One submission per individual; multiple entries will be disqualified.
The 4 winning photographers receive a photo commission to Hong Kong and Macao.
Smithsonian Photo Contest 2018
Closes 30 November 2018
You may enter up to 15 photographs into each of the following categories, with a total contest submission of 90 photographs:
Natural World: Animals, plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features; and scientific processes and endeavors.
Travel: Locales, peoples or activities in the United States and abroad that convey a sense of place.
People: Portraits and photos of groups or individuals.
The American Experience: Events, objects or activities connecting the American people to their history or their cultural heritage; photographs that tell us what it means to be an American and provide a sense of what it is like to live in this country.
Altered Images: Photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e., colorizing, toning, collage, photo composites, HDR, etc.).
Mobile: Any photograph taken with a mobile device (phone or tablet).
Sony World Photography Award 2019 – Open Competition
All category winners of the Professional, Open, Youth and Student competitions will receive digital imaging equipment from Sony, andcash prizes of $25,000 will be presented to the Photographer of the Year and $5,000 to the Open Photographer of the Year. In addition, there are prizes for monthly winners.

The Big Picture
The Telegraph’s weekly travel photography competition, with a straightforward single theme of Travel.
Gives the chance to win a £500 camera.
Readers’ Travel Photo Competition
The Guardian’s monthly and annual travel photo competition, no theme other than Travel.
Monthly winners receive a £200 voucher.
All monthly winners move through to the annual competition, and the grand winner in 2018 will be awarded a photography holiday to West Greenland.
Each month’s competition closes on 25th of the month, but December closes on 17th.
Wex Mondays 2018
Wex Photographic runs a weekly competition – simply tweet your photo on a Monday with hashtag #WexMondays and you’ll be considered for the weekly selection. The only rule is that it must be a photo taken in the past week. The weekly winners are well publicised and move into the competition for the annual winner and inclusion in the exhibition at their Whitechapel store.
Emerging Talent Awards
Lens Culture is looking for 50 outstanding new talents to have their work displayed at a New York gallery and to appear in their book, The Best of LensCulture, Volume 3. All entrants to the competition receive feedback from the judges.
