This striking and exotic design can be found at the side doorway to 24 Old Bond Street, the building that used to belong to the famous perfumers, Atkinsons.
Atkinsons was founded in 1799 and traded here from 1832, in a building designed for them by Vincent Harris (1876-1971), who designed a number of significant buildings in the first half of the twentieth century, including the Ministry of Defence Main Building on Whitehall. The building was later taken over by J. Fox & Co. and later still became the property of the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society, who currently let space in the building to various businesses, including Salvatore Ferragamo.
The store was famous enough to appear in one of Mrs Dalloway’s shopping trips in the eponymous novel by Virginia Woolf. If you are a Woolf fan, you may like to retrace Mrs Dalloway’s steps in person – click here for a self-guided walk.
