A bronze tribute to David Livingstone, leaning on his walking stick, was sculpted in the 1930s by Sir William Reid Dick and stands close to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side. This is not it!
In 2004 the Zambian government, made efforts to obtain said statue from Zimbabwe, claiming that the statue was in ill repair and that it had once stood on the Zambian (then Southern Rhodesia) side anyway, only being moved to the other side (then Northern Rhodesia) in the 1950s. There was also a belief that there had been a second statue to the great Scottish explorer, this time shielding his eyes as he looked into the sun; this had also been on the Zambian side but had vanished.
Negotiations to obtain the walking stick statue failed, and this new statue of Livingstone shielding his eyes was unveiled in November 2005 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the town of Livingstone and the 150th anniversary of Livingstone first seeing the Falls.

Who would have thought that a statue would have such an intriguing story. Thanks for sharing it.

Nice take on the Monument theme! It’s interesting the kinds of things international politics involve themselves in. Who would have thought?
You’re welcome to come and see what my take on the theme is:

Great story Debbie, I was on the Zimbabwean side, but don’t recollect any statue. Wonder where it is located? Anyway I rather like this – a fitting monument of a very interesting chap.

Overlooking Devil’s Cataract I believe. This pose looks a little more relaxed than the other one.
