Swinging Kings Cross

aDSC04178

The ambitious redevelopment of the Kings Cross area continues apace, with the latest building to get attention being the famous German Gymnasium which stands slap bang between Kings Cross Station and neighbouring St Pancras Station.  This landmark is currently under wraps, literally, while it is refurbished to house a new restaurant.

The now Grade II listed building was originally designed in 1865 by Edward Gruning for the German Gymnastics Society.  It was the first purpose-built gymnasium of its kind in England and was used as a venue for the first National Olympic Games in 1866.

It is currently wrapped in a giant mural designed by Barcelona artist Gregori Saavedra. This 790m2 mural is inspired by the ongoing transformation of King’s Cross and depicts many of the landmarks and features of the neighbourhood.

The work was created using a digital collage technique and once ready, the artwork was split into 13 vertical sections. The sections were positioned on the outside of the building and joined together by a team of four abseilers.

  1. I was there a couple of days ago to see King’s Cross in bloom. Was tempted to have a go on that swing in the birdcage but didn’t! Great to see how the area is changing

    • I have some “in bloom” photos to come very soon. I use Kings Criss and St Pancras regularly but I was still surprised to see how huge the whole development area is.

  2. It is amazing how much this place has changed. I grew up near here and 20 years ago it was a squalid dump that you wouldn’t walk about it at night… and now it is a cosmopolitan part of the city with new businesses opening up all the time

  3. very, very cool! Last time I was in London was Feb 2012 and the whole place was under construction–made it more difficult to find Harry! 🙂
