Formidable Churches

DSC09678

Cathédrale de la Major, Marseille

The impressive Cathedral of Marseille has towers at the entrance that reach 60 metres in height, a central cupola that is 70 metres high with a diameter of 17.7 metres, and the building itself stretches 142 metres in length.

The scale of the building and the unusual black and white stripes bear a striking resemblance to Notre Dame de la Garde, high on the hill above Marseille.

The similarity is not mere chance; the architect Henri Espérandieu worked on both churches.  Quite something given that he was a Protestant.  In fact, although he was apparently the sole designer of Notre Dame, the plans were presented under the name of his studio as his mentor Vaudoyen had concerns about the church’s acceptance of plans for such an important building coming from an inexperienced and Protestant architect.  Clearly, they needn’t have worried.
