The World in a Kiss

The close-up black and white glimpses of this giant mural piqued people’s interest so I thought I’d show some more shots in colour this time.

It is a relatively new mural, that covers a whole wall in a tiny square, Plaça Isidre Nonell,  very close to the Cathedral.  It was created to celebrate the tricentenary of the Siege of Barcelona in 1714.  Those who lost their lives in the defence of the city were buried in a cemetery, now Fossar de les Moreres, where Catalans gather every 11 September to celebrate the National Day of Catalonia.

It is fitting therefore that the mural comprises 4000 photographs provided by local people under the title “moments of liberty”.  The man that pulled these together into this work of art is local artist and photographer Joan Fontcuberta.

I’ll sign off with a great quote that is on a plaque next to this mural:

“The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon, but its echo lasts a great deal longer.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr
