The Light of The Spirit by Patrice Warrener
The original abbey dates back to the 11th century, but the present building dates mainly from the reign of King Henry III in the 13th century. It has been the setting for every Coronation since 1066 and for numerous other royal occasions, including sixteen royal weddings.
Needless to say, it has undergone many changes during its time, recently including the addition of the statues of ten 20th century martyrs in 1998. These ten decorate the façade above the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey and consist of Maximilian Kolbe, Manche Masemola, Janani Luwum,Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia, Martin Luther King, Óscar Romero, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Esther John, Lucian Tapiedi, and Wang Zhiming.
For the next few days these martyrs are stunningly coloured and illuminated as part of the Lumière Festival. The artists responsible for this incredible work is Patrice Warrener; he is recognised worldwide for this chromolithe projection system.

I was lucky enough to come across this one as I walked through Westminster yesterday evening but, officially, Lumière takes place across London 14-17 January at 18:30-22:30.

I was out looking at more when the One Show was on, but wish I’d seen that.
It was freezing cold in London this evening and my fingers were so numb I was having trouble operating my camera! Some fantastic sights – I haven’t been home long so will be tomorrow before I look at the photos.

Wonderful! Much more to see, Debs 🙂
Lumiere was mentioned briefly on The One Show on TV tonight, in connection with the sea glass project last year. Me and Mick make a very swift appearance on the beach collecting sea glass. 🙂

Fun! Wish I could see that in person. Did anybody shoot a YouTube video, I wonder?

I could have done with a tripod to get a really sharp shot. The characteristics given to the statues is amazing.
