Lacustrine beauty

For me, this is one of the most beautiful spots in Europe. The town of Hallstatt sits on Hallstätter See, and if you arrive by train, this is watery journey is your final approach as the rail station is on the opposite side of the lake to the town.

Access to Hallstatt by road was often difficult due to heavy snow and avalanches, so train and ferry were an important lifeline for the town. The only ship postal service in Austria ran here, transferring mail from the station on the east side of the lake, to the town on the west side.

There is now a tunnelled road providing access to the town, but for the views I highly recommend arriving by train and boat.

    • Yes, and it hasn’t / can’t change much. I was there about 30 years ago, and returning more recently most of it looks dated same (apart from the glass viewpoint up above)

  6. Wow, what a gorgeous place! I think I’ll be singing “The hills are alive…” all day, at least in my head to the relief of those around me. 🙂 I do have the music from the movie so I may have to play it on my keyboard later today.

  11. With all your photos (now and before) of Hallstadt I am starting to regret my very short stopover there a number of years back. We’d been on a skiing holiday in the Pongau (about an hour’s drive from the Hallstädter See) and we decided to take the return drive slow. The weather (in my defense) wasn’t great and one of our the boys just had the Kelts in school so we decided to visit the World Heritage Museum in Hallstadt. https://www.hallstatt.net/about-hallstatt/ausfluege-en-US/ausstellungen-en-US/the-world-heritage-museum-of-hallstatt/
