Blue sky over the Kosmos

Kosmos cinema, Berlin, August 2021

This attractive building was built in 1961 as one of the largest and most modern cinemas in GDR. Its smooth colour-flecked exterior really stands out amongst its surrounding buildings on Karl-Marx-Allee. Both its name and its design were inspired by the space race of the times; even the interior lights were built to resemble the jets of a space rocket. The place has been an event centre since 2006.

  1. It’s amazing how much the space race influenced design back in the 50’s and early 60’s. This building reminds me a little of a mid-century modern one might see out in Palm Springs.
