Cretto di Burri

Cretto di Burri, Gibellina, Sicily, June 2022

This is giant piece of landscape artwork, started in 1984 and not completed until 2015.

The Italian artist, Alberto Burri, covered the remains of old Gibellina (destroyed in the Belice Valley earthquake in 1968) in this white concrete shroud, leaving gaps where the streets ran. It leaves us with an eerie memorial to a lost town and its lost people.
