Outside Smithfield market at about 21:30, London, November 2022
Around 9 p.m. the lorries arrive loaded with produce for sale at the market later that night. The market actually opens at midnight, so the cutting and preparation staff have a few hours to do their work, before the customers turn up, many of who are restaurants coming straight in to buy for the next evening after closing that night. After a busy night, the market closes around 7 a.m.

Are people really going shopping at midnight to get their groceries now?

No this is more for businesses – shops and restaurants go in at that time to be ready for the following day. Public go in to be nosy more than to shop.

No it’s just my regular walk back to Farringdon station. But so am very tempted to go on a guided walk. Or yo just wander with my camera.

It’s my walk back to station from society evenings. But a bit early to see very much activity.

A night there would be fascinating, if not all that pleasant for a nearly -vegetarian I guess.
