Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon inside St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire, January 2025

It’s all those rules of geometry that dictate how much of the moon we will see at any point in its cycle of earth. But here in St Alban’s Cathedral, this incredible giant moon artwork lets us walk around and see as much of the moon as we want, whatever day of the month.
If you’d like to see it yourself it will be hanging here in St Albans until 15 February 2025.
To see where else it is, has been and will be, click here. I’m going to be watching this closely as I’d love to see one outdoors and one over water.
Some museums have actually purchased one of these moons (available in different sizes) and they are potentially on permanent display.

I saw this in Glasgow when it visited the Mackintosh Church, as did his Earth later. Quite incredible, both of them, though the day I visited the moon there was a very disappointed little boy there with his grandparents who were expecting a whole museum of moon and space artefacts!

Ooh I didn’t know there’s an earth too. I’ll have to watch out for that as well.

I knew it had been travelling but didn’t know it had been to Durham. That would have been good to see.

Thanks Becky. They are doing some candlelit evenings so I’m hoping to get to one of those and get something more moody. And with a real camera.

It seems there are several of them and they travel a lot – much more erratic than the real moon! But not quite as old 😉 There’s one in New Zealand at the moment.
I’m updating the post to put a link to the schedule.

omg, that’s amazing! (I’m still trying to figure out how to make square images since WordPress updated their dashboard again and I can’t find anything!)

I make them square before loading to WordPress. I do it on my phone, or in Lightroom

Thanks for the tip! WordPress used to have a set of options for shapes for people composing galleries, but it suddenly disappeared. I’m sure I’ll find it again, it’s just in a different place. I hate that they keep fiddling with the format, though.
