This old building is still a hotel, as you can see from the tell-tale Tripadvisor sign (I checked and it has mixed reviews). The hotel does in fact occupy two old houses here on Reguliersgracht, one built around 1750 and the other round 1870.
The RAC sign here dates back to 1976. Gone are the days when travellers went around clutching their AA and RAC manuals, studying lists of approved hotels. Now it’s smartphones, Tripadvisor and helpful apps and you’re as likely to find one of this metal signs in an auction house as outside a hotel. Interestingly though, the RAC still offers a form of hotel service, in conjunction with booking.com.

Hi Debbie,
I had no idea what the blue sign meant; I guess I need to travel more. Thanks for playing today.
Happy Blue Monday!

It’s a rather British thing that spilled over into Europe so I’m not surprised you hadn’t seen one before.
