Clouds over St Pancras

aDSC01543 There is a new giant art installation at St Pancras International Station.  Called Clouds: Meteoros, the two giant clouds are white and fluffy, with dark grey human figures positioned on top of them. aDSC01546crop aDSC01547crop aDSC01549crop aDSC01550 aDSC01551 aDSC01552 aDSC01553 Clouds: Meteros was created by British-born sculptor Lucy Orta, together with her Argentinian husband Jorge and is the culmination of around three years’ work by the pair at their Paris studios.

Lucy says of their creation: “When St Pancras invited Jorge and me to submit a potential sculpture for the station, this was the perfect opportunity to create the crowning piece to our Cloud series. Inspired by the history and grandeur of the station itself, Cloud: Meteoros is designed to unite people inside the station with the world outside. …. We like to think of [Meteoros] floating amidst the vaulted ceiling like a magic carpet taking the passengers on an imaginary journey in the skies”.

The couple say they hope that this artwork will encourage passengers at St Pancras to look up, that it will take their minds off the mundane and encourage them to “spend more time dreaming”.

This is the first piece in what will be the Terrace Wires series, set here above the Grand Terrace at St Pancras International Station.  You have plenty of time to visit as this piece will be on show until this autumn, with a second piece being unveiled in spring 2014. .
