What Time Is It?

aDSC08633c

This bronze sundial stands in Trinity Square Gardens, just outside Tower Hill underground station.

It was commissioned by the London Underground and designed by John Chitty (Architect) and Edwin Russell (Sculptor), in association with Mike Duffie (Chief Architect of London Underground).  It was unveiled in 1992.

To obtain clock time during winter months, the instructions read, you must deduct one hour from the shadow reading.  The time shown should be accurate to within 16 minutes.

The engravings around the dial tell the history of London – for more on this see History in the Round.
