Sirkeci Station, in the European part of Istanbul, is famous for being the terminus for the Orient Express. A temporary station opened here in 1873, the first Orient Express train ran in 1883, and this fine building opened in 1890.
The original Orient Express runs no more, though the Venice Simplon Orient Express does make one journey a year to Istanbul. You can still admire the original station, however, if you venture beyond the new, modern facade.

I’ve been here too but have to admit I didn’t pay much attention to the windows!
I’ve just finished reading a book (translated into English) called ‘the last train to Istanbul’ by the Turkish writer Ayse Kulin. It’s the little-known story of how Turkish diplomats in France and Germany enabled a number of Turkish and other Jews to escape from occupied France by train and return to Istanbul – it’s a fascinating tale. The train in the story finally pulls into this station.
