Larger than life, this statue of Nelson Mandela strides towards the Peace Palace in Den Haag.
Arie Schippers has captured the great man’s massive personality in this more than twice life size sculpture in the business district of Den Haag.
Originally scheduled to be unveiled by Mandela himself on Nelson Mandela Day in 2012, this had to be postponed due to his poor health; it was finally unveiled by Desmond Tutu on the 25th September that year.

The statue of Mandela captures the energy and spirit of this bigger-than-life man. Spinoza, the eternal thinker and moral philosopher should be honored. He’s also an incredible man.

What a wonderfully animated statue, I like the idea of it being twice life size, fits the man and his Long Walk to Freedom.

Mandela was a clue on JEOPARDY! TV show recently: “FOREIGN LEADERS: In 1964 he was convicted of sabotage & conspiracy ,& served over 20 years in prison.” I think that’s ultimately what made him great.

Holland has a history with Africa, so I’m not surprised, and Mandala did much for international peace – with the Peace palace where the international court resides. Across from this building I went to a small American college (not there anymore).

good to have a sculpture as a tribute to this great man; too many sculptures were made for the wrong persons…

P.S.:

another sculpture in Den Haag, I took this photo, because I adore this philosopher very much (a landmark in the history of thinking too, SPINOZA):

Yes, and this is the best one I’ve seen of him. It really has movement.

You’ve captured the sense of movement that the original conveys. I like the first because you’ve created a space for him to ‘walk’ into, the second because the viewer van imagine the man coming forward to greet people. Great statue, thanks for sharing.
