No Cash

DSC00561

I came across these signs at a cafe in Amsterdam.  I wanted to use cash so I didn’t use the cafe.

There were other similar signs around Amsterdam.

I have to say, I find the signs offensive.  Almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day: the threat to their health is from lack of cash, not the spending of it!  (Source: World Bank figures for 2005)

What do you think? Should it be allowed to ban the acceptance of cash?

  1. So weird…I had never seen those signs before. Usually I wouldnt have an issue – I am always low of cash (in case I get pick-pocketed or just get absent-minded), but it just seems like a bizarre thing to do, bc o the CC fees that businesses pay.

  2. that is pretty crazy to not take cash – but I guess we can feel it coming – with all the chips in credit cards now -and even the “smart driving licenses” have chips in them… Big Brother whispers again….

  3. I have to make sure I get cash every week just in case i need it but my son and his generation (he is 22) rarely have any cash so I am not surprised to see things going this way. I just wonder why. Is having cash that cumbersome? You have to be able to make change if you have cash, so that could be a problem. Is dealing in cash setting yourself up for robbery or embezzling? What is the motivation for ending the exchange of paper currency?

    • Well, it might be that the banks and other companies that provide cards make money out of them – paid by retailers, and ultimately by us, their customers. Too cynical? Probably not!
