V is for… Vespa

Gold Vespa in Madrid

The iconic Vespa made its first appearance in post-war Italy, in 1946, and is now known and loved the world over.  In a CNN Survey in 2013, it was voted among the twelve objects that have most influenced world design in the last 100 years.  Appearing in Roman Holiday in 1952 with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn certainly did its reputation no harm, and since then it has appeared in many films including  Quadrophenia, American Graffiti, The Talented Mr. Ripley102 Dalmatians and Dear Diary.

But enough of the words, now I’ll let you enjoy this collage of scooters from my travels in the last 6 months.

  1. On a vacation trip to Zion National Park, I was emerging from the long tunnel on my way from Bryce and encountered a herd, flock, gaggle (?) of Vespas riders coming up the steep hill in the opposite direction. In all their many colours, they looked like scurrying beetles crawling their way to the top.

  2. Wasn’t there a catchy advertising slogan in the 60s, ‘Better getta Vespa’?

I totally got the choice of name for the scooter when a large wasp or vespa (or maybe it was a hornet) disturbed us one summer morning with a droning loud enough to wake the dead. I regret to say this vespa was itself eventually beaten to death and deposited unceremoniously in the loo. Where it defied all attempts to flush it away.

I’ll leave the story of the scorpipn in the bath water for another time… Great colourful pics, by the way!

    • Lol Poor Vespa!

The story is that it got it’s name because it looked like a wSp, but there’s no doubt that the noise of its 2 stroke engine (gone now) was very wasp like!
