The Giants of Pi

The Giants of Pi by Guivernau, C/ de Petritxol, Barcelona

Back in the Middle Ages, in Barcelona, the giants Goliath and St. Christopher, along with several monstrous beasts, were an important part of the Corpus Christi celebration.  Guivernau recognised the Giants of Pi in this bright ceramic mural that now hangs on Calle de Petritxol along with many other murals.

The giants themselves are still a  important part of the historical Corpus Christi processions. In fact, giants have become an almost everyday part of Catalan culture and they can be seen at other important festivals and religious celebrations throughout the region.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Barcelona just now, be sure to watch the Corpus Christi procession tomorrow, 19th June.
