Paris’ Other Tower

-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 58

Every Thursday, I publish a post containing photo(s) taken from above or below, and invite you to join in the challenge by posting your own photos with an up or down perspective.

On my recent trip to Paris, I headed over to the 14th arrondissement to visit the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson.

To get there I took the metro to Raspail and took a walk diagonally across the Cimetière Montparnasse.  It was a fascinating walk and I stopped so many times that I was in danger of being too late to get into the Fondation.  I’ll feature both the Fondation and the cemetery in more detail soon, but for my Up post this week I’m featuring the Tour Montparnasse, whose modern structure contrasts starkly with the cemetery.

The tower opened back in 1973 and looks surprisingly up-to-date given its age.  At a height of 210 metres, it dwarfs everything around.

It is principally an office block, but you can take one of the fastest lifts in Europe to the 56th floor in 38 seconds, and then walk up to the rooftop viewing platform for great views over Paris.  It is not as tall as the Eiffel Tower, but has one great advantage over its older competitor in the viewing stakes: from the Montparnasse Tower you get an impressive view of the Eiffel Tower!

  1. Oh that looks like a neat tower-I will have to try and get there the next time we head to France. It definitely looks like it was built a lot more recently than 1973!

  2. Happy to discover your blog from TPD! I haven’t made it to the top of Tour Montparnasse (normally I’m trying to avoid having it in my photos ;)… but you’ve convinced me I have to get to the top!

  3. I remember seeing how much Tour Montparnasse stood out from its much shorter surroundings. We didn’t have time to get all the way out there to go up, but I bet the view is indeed fantastic.

    • No. When you see it from ground level in that area it doesn’t seem to strange, but it certainly stands out on the skyline.
