Walt Disney Concert Hall – week 1

a1_20150214__DSC0395_6000 x 4000 WEEK1

The Walt Disney Concert Hall opened In October 2003 in Downtown LA.  Designed by Frank Gehry, the sinuous curves and shiny textures of the stainless steel exterior make the building instantly recognisable.  The building has a matte finish but the building still reflects light.  When first built, reflections ins some non-matte areas were magnified by the curves and caused over-heating of nearby buildings and caused problems for drivers unable to see in the bright lights.  The offending areas have since had some of their shine removed.

Bounded as it is by Hope Street, Grand Avenue, and 1st and 2nd Streets and on a steep hill, it is hard to capture its size and striking design in one shot.  On the day I visited the sky was grey and the light rather flat, so I have chosen this image for a spot of post editing as part of Robyn’s One Four Challenge.

For this week 1 image, I have done my usual starting edits in Lightroom: lens profile corrections, sharpening, opened the shadows, dropped the highlights and tweaked the whites and blacks.  I have added a touch of clarity, cooled the blues with the Old Polar preset, increased the contrast and cropped very slightly to remove a lamp from the far right edge.

I am not finished yet – watch the coming weeks to see what improvements I manage to achieve.

  1. Such a recognisable place! Love the composition here Debbie and your process so far. Definitely looking forward to the rest.
I imagine initially it must have been like some shiny space ship plonked into the area 😜
