These colourful Samsui women on Banda Street, in Singapore’s Chinatown, are juxtaposed with a mural of the present day skyline.
About 200,000 Samsui women were believed to have emigrated to Singapore from China between 1934 and 1938, coming to find jobs in construction and other industry. Their contribution to the development of Singapore has been recognised.
These murals were created as part of the 50th birthday celebrations that stretch through this year.

A lovely tribute!

Beautiful! I studied with some Singaporians – they’re very modern (read: almost Western) in their thinking.
