An Extra Pair of Hands

One pair of hands is never enough; the painters and sculptors of Hindu deities found this to be a problem and overcame by simpling adding extras.  Apparently there is little evidence that the idea of multiple hands, and even heads, came from scripture.  It seems to be more a practical issue relating to the depiction of deities; both a desire to demonstrate power and also a desire to show the nature of the deity by the objects they hold and the signs (mudra) they make.

Goddess Kali

All of these images are of the deities that adorn the Sri Veerama Kaliamman Temple in Singapore, a temple dedicated to the fierce goddess Kali.
