Symmetrical Views

I enjoy reflection!

Well, that’s to say, I do enjoy mulling things over while I’m out walking or in the shower in the morning, but the fact I mean to share with you is that I love shooting reflections.  For one thing they can be a handy way of getting a view of something I can’t quite see properly (usually because I’m too short!).  I featured a view of the BT Tower reflected in blue green glass yesterday.  Now, as it happens, I couldn’t see anywhere near as much of it when I looked at the real thing as it was hiding behind the rest of the skyline.  The tall glass building had a big advantage over me.

But I have a specific favourite type of reflection shot, one that gives an almost perfect symmetrical view.

The one above is a symmetrical view of Dublin, one that required a little bit of clambering to balance on my hotel room’s window sill.  Definitely worth the effort, I think.

This monochrome shot, was an Istanbul street shot; one of many photos I’m fond of, from a city that I fell in love with on my trip last year.

I love the clarity provided by obliging windows, the clarity that will make you think for at least a moment about which half is real and which half is reflection.  This year I have set myself a project of symmetrical reflections, so hopefully you’ll see more of these double views  from my travels throughout 2016.

In the meantime, I’ve been playing with my editing to think more about the effects of symmetry on a view.  The free version of Picmonkey allows compilation of collages, and you can use a 2-picture collage to play around with this.  One of my favourites so far is the very colourful Stockholm shot below.

And let’s finish with a natural bit of symmetry provided by a reflection in the Zambezi.  Not perfect symmetry as the river doesn’t give the clarity of glass, but the view is wonderful.

  1. 🙂 Your pictures are excellent! Love all of them.
Tinkering on a window sill was definitely worth it. But I’d be scared to death to do it.
Congratulations and have a very HAPPY week! 🙂
