Warhol at Number 52

Andy Warhol door mural, corner of Pacific and Brooks, Venice, California, February 2015

Artist and photographer, Karen Bystedt, carried out a photo shot of Andy Warhol back in 1982 as part of a male model photography book she was working on.  She used two photographs of that shoot for the book, and the rest of the images went into storage until she rediscovered them in 2011.  She has restored ten of the lost images and issued them in a restricted release of ten boxes, half colour, half monochrome.  Some other Warhol works have been sold, including a large portrait to Prince Albert of Monaco.

However, Karen is not focused on exclusivity, she particularly enjoys bringing art out to the public, so that everyone can enjoy.  In November 2013 her Warhol portraits were projected above the Key Club on Sunset Strip, Los Angeles, and she then invited a number of well known street artists to create murals involving her Warhol shots.  I am hoping to catch sight of more of these joint work on my future travels.

The red door featured here, was created in Venice, California with Ralph Ziman, a South African film writer / director / producer and now street artist, who lives and works in Venice Beach.  You can catch a glimpse of the effort and creativity that went into producing this:

  2. You’d certainly never miss the door! Sometimes I see new housing areas which have houses which, although they may be large and attractive in their way, all look very similar. Not a fan.
