Lagan Walkway, Belfast, March 2016
The Irish inventor and engineer, Sir Samuel Cleland Davidson, invented and patented a wide range of industrial machines, including drying, dust removing and air conditioning systems.
He spent his early working years in India, working at his father’s tea business, so it is no surprise to discover that when this talented engineer returned to Belfast he developed innovative tea drying machines. In fact, it was these machines that developed into air conditioning systems. In 1881, he founded the Sirocco Works in Belfast and his company grew into one of the largest engineering firms in Ireland. During World War I the Sirocco works supplied equipment to the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy.
The Sirocco Works sat alongside the Lagan, behind the orange wall that you can see in the photo above. The buildings were demolished in 2009, though, as part of Belfast’s ongoing riverside development.

Hi Margaret
I was there the night before St Patricks. Hadn’t been for a couple of years and it was much too brief a visit. I nearly changed my flight to stay on another night or two but it was too expensive. I am going to try to return soon and will let you know. I hadn’t really thought about the blog side of things but then had enough time for a fair bit of wandering.
