Melpomene, one of the nine daughters of Zeuss, each a named Muse, became the Muse of Tragedy. She was the Goddess of Singing; indeed, her name was derived from the Greek verb melpô or melpomai meaning to celebrate with dance and song.
To emphasise her role of tragic inspiration, she is usually shown wearing cothurnus boots, traditionally worn by tragic actors, whilst carrying a tragic mask in one hand and a club in the other.
