Too similar to Saint Helena Airport?

The i360 tower in Brighton looked like this for too long on Thursday this week.  Too naked!

This new viewing attraction opened in August this year, providing 360 degree views of Brighton and its surroundings.

The tower is 161 metres tall, made of 17 steel tubes, each one measuring 3.9 metres in diameter, but varying in length and weight. These tubes are connected by 1336 bolts, the heaviest of which weighs 85 tonnes!  The viewing pod is 18 metres in diameter and can take 200 people at a time, departing every 20-30 minutes.

I was due to enjoy the attraction on Thursday, but on arrival I found that my scheduled flight had been delayed to allow a large hospitality group to ascend first.

Not the best news after travelling down specifically for this trip, but we waited patiently on the deck for the next departure, which never happened.  We were told that our trip was delayed and then cancelled due to high wind (22 mph according to the Met Office), but Twitter finally revealed that it was a “technical glitch”.

I’ve heard no further information on the glitch, but my assumption of a similarity to the Saint Helena airport that can’t cope with wind was possibly incorrect!

    • Strangely, it isn’t, or not to me, anyway. I was worried, because it’s so close to the gorgeous west pier. I was dashing down to get there in time for the hefty security checks, and when I looked down the coast from the active pier, I couldn’t see it at all at first. Because it is slender, partly, and also because it is so tall – not seeing the top seems to make it less conspicuous. They have done a nice renovation job of staircases around it, but it’s still a bit of a mess on the front while they do some more work.
