A colourful note: violet red made its Crayola appearance in 1958. Crayola described it as a replacement name for their Magenta colour, but if you look at examples of the various purple shades already in the boxes, violet red was new. In fact, that is further supported by the fact that the magenta crayon reappeared later and even featured in the same box as the violet red.
